Atty. Felix S. Alicer, regional executive director of the DENR-12 and concurrent SBPS-PAMB chair, said the SBPS Peopleโ€™s Day is one way of giving back to the stakeholders to recognize their collective efforts in the protection and conservation of the SBPS. โ€œWe want to let them feel that we care for them and they are included in the management of SBPS,โ€ he said.
Several activities were simultaneously facilitated by the local government units (LGUs) of General Santos City and six Sarangani municipalities such as the distributions of school supplies, groceries, and hygiene kits; feeding programs; parlor games; medical missions; short environmental lectures; film showing; raffle giveaways; free haircut, manicure and pedicure; free ice cream for all; and โ€œPista sa Nayonโ€ which were availed and joined by local communities and other stakeholders.
Maria Elvira V. Lumayag, PENRO of Sarangani said โ€œThe SBPS People's Day is our way of appreciating the joint actions of the local communities, LGUs, and organizations in protecting and conserving the protected seascape. This celebration is a reminder of the importance of everyoneโ€™s participation in protecting and conserving our natural resources for our present and future generations.โ€
SBPS Protected Area Superintendent Joy C. Ologuin emphasized that the local communities play crucial roles to maintain the abundant resources of the bay. โ€œWe celebrate everybody's efforts through this People's Day. We rejoice the success of the conservation efforts and continually advocate environmental integrity,โ€ she said.
The Peopleโ€™s Day is one of the activities lined-up for SBPS Week 2023 which started on March 5. This yearโ€™s celebration carries the theme โ€œLove for Life.โ€ (With reports and photos from DENR-PENRO Sarangani and PAMO-SBPS)
