To celebrate the World Bamboo Day 2021 with the theme: "Alay ng Bayan sa Inang Kalikasan, Kawayan,” the DENR-12 conducted a tree planting event enjoining the Simultaneous Bamboo Planting Activity, today September 17 at Brgy. Dumaguil, Norala, South Cotabato.
A total of six-hundred (600) Bamboo (Bambusa merrilliana) propagules were planted in a two-hectare area located at Purok Garido, Brgy. Dumaguil, Norala.
According to Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer of Banga, CENRO Abunawas B. Abduladsis, “World Bamboo Day is actually celebrated every 18th of September however since it will be on a weekend, the office decided to conduct the activity today.”
“The Barangay Local Government Unit of Dumaguil has always been supportive of the plans and programs of DENR CENRO Banga, which is why this World Bamboo Day, we selected their area again as our plantation site”, he added.
On the other hand, Regional Executive Director, Atty. Felix S. Alicer highlighted the importance of Bamboo in DENR’s reforestation efforts.
“In the past, the focus of the Department is more on timber and other agro-forestry commodities. It was only during the time of Secretary Roy A. Cimatu that the department opted to establish bamboo plantations which is actually a great step given that bamboos have great economic value. We now realize the potential that bamboo can offer especially as a timber substitute”, RED Alicer said.
Meanwhile, Honorable Clemente B. Fedoc, Mayor of Norala was also present during the event. He extended his gratitude to the different offices, clubs and groups who continuously supports the LGU and the DENR in its activities.
“We are grateful for the opportunity being provided by the DENR XII to the Municipality of Norala to plant more trees. I constantly remind our locals to continue participating and caring for our environment not only for this generation but also for the next”, he said.
The event was spearheaded by the National Greening Program Coordinators of DENR XII and CENRO Banga which was participated by various sectors; KARANCHO, Rotary Club of Koronadal Central, Barangay Local Government Unit of Dumaguil, Local Government Unit of Norala, and the Philippine National Police. Minimum health protocols such as wearing of mask, physical distancing and hand washing were observed during the conducted event. | Photos by: RSCIG
