
𝐊𝐎𝐑𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐃𝐀𝐋 𝐂𝐈𝐓𝐘, 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐨 – The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Cotabato upheld a two-day capacity building on Forest Law Enforcement with Wildlife Handling on June 8-9, 2023 at Kidapawan City.
A total of 42 participants from the PENRO Cotabato, Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (CENROs) Midsayap and Matalam joined the said activity that aims to develop the skills of PENRO Cotabato Personnel on wild animal handling requiring competence, knowledge of the risks involved, quarantine protocols, and the humane treatment of the animal they are handling.
The capacity building focused on the manual of operations and guidelines for rescued/turned-over wildlife which was discussed by Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Section (PAMBCS) Chief, For. Mangayao C. Macapodi while the guidelines for the Safe and Proper Handling of Wildlife and Wildlife Capturing Technique were discussed by the Philippine Eagle Foundation Senior Animal Keeper/Conservation Breeding Head Mr. Dominic Tadena and Ms. Lohwana Halaq.
Technical Services Division Chief Shirley Uy emphasized the importance of improving the wildlife handling skills of PENRO Cotabato personnel, and that it is crucial to learn the proper handling, the safe, and the right approach to complex animals like snakes, eagles, and deer.
It was recommended that a quick response team shall be organized to address the issues of wildlife handling. Further, the overall team gained confidence with their firsthand experience on how to restrain wild animals properly as it is important that the rescuers protect themselves as well as the animal they are handling.# (With reports and photos from PENRO Cotabato) | 𝐑𝐒𝐂𝐈𝐆𝐉
