Sixty-three small holder farmers and Enhanced National Greening Program (ENGP) beneficiaries (42 women and 21 men) from Barangay Ticulab, Maitum town in Sarangani Province on Tuesday were capacitated on improving their native chicken production, a biodiversity-friendly agricultural enterprise.

DENR Sarangani Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO) Maria Elvira V. Lumayag said that the activity was a convergence initiative of DENR-PENRO Sarangani Gender and Development Program and Sarangani Provincial Veterinary Office with the help of Governor Rogelio D. Pacquiaoβs flagship program Ronda Probinsya which is anchored on a seven-point agenda geared towards a resilient and progressive Sarangani.
Β
Sarangani Province designated veterinarian Dr. Bernard C. Cababat, who served as the resource person of the capacity building, shared his expertise on the different breeds of chicken suitable for backyard farming, scientific skill development of farmers on feeding, housing and disease prevention as well as management. Dr. Cababat and his team also distributed to the participants the antibiotics for chicken and anti-parasitic powder for swine.
Β
According to DENR-PENRO Sarangani, ENGP beneficiaries who are already engaged in backyard poultry farming preferred this agricultural venture since it requires less infrastructure setup for women, aged family members and children and the poultry eggs and meat are the most accessible and cheapest sources of protein. Moreover, the small scale/backyard poultry production is a biodiversity-friendly agricultural practice and a climate smart agriculture approach. | With report and photos from SRCabildo, DENR-PENRO Sarangani IO Designate
