The Regional Carbon Stock Assessment Team recently conducted a carbon stock assessment on five (5) graduated agro-forest plantations established under the National Greening Program (NGP) in Sarangani Province.
ย
The assessed NGP sites, which were established from 2011-2015 with 85% survival rate, are located in barangays Kinabalan and San Roque in Malungon, barangays Tamadang and Tablao in Kiamba, and Barangay Upo in Maitum. The assessment of the said NGP plantations served as a mitigation action to climate change.
ย
As BIMP EAGA member region, the Region 12 cascades the international agreements on climate change mitigation through the assessment of NGP plantations as a mitigation action to climate change by means of conducting a Carbon Stock Assessment.
ย
The NGP is a translation of international policies aimed to materialize the attainment of the countryโ€™s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement by enhancing greenhouse gas sinks and reservoirs.
ย
Carbon stock assessment will result to the development a comprehensive picture of carbon stocks at provincial and regional level and to add Region 12 at the national inventory of sinks as mandated to the committed parties including the Philippines in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
