Various officials and personnel of the DENR, partner national government agencies, local government units, and other stakeholders on Sunday evening took part in the kick-off activity of Month of the Ocean (MOO) 2022 in General Santos City which is celebrated annually to give special focus on the importance of the oceans.

This year’s celebration of the MOO carries the theme β€œProtect and Restore Ecosystems and Biodiversity.”

DENR Undersecretary for Field Operations-Mindanao Joselin Marcus Fragada, CESO III underscored the importance of marine protected areas (MPAs) and urged the public to help the DENR in protecting, conserving, and preserving the marine biodiversity.

Atty. Felix S. Alicer, DENR-12 regional executive director, stressed that the ocean, which is the source of livelihood of millions of people, is confronted with different problems which can be eradicated by taking part in various environmental undertakings of the government and its partners.

DENR Biodiversity Management Bureau Director Natividad Y. Bernardino expressed that this year, they will be launching the year of the protected areas (PA) in which the Sarangani Bay is included. She said that they are taking notice of the various issues and challenges confronted by the PAs.

Several partners of the DENR were also recognized during the event for their invaluable efforts and participation in the Crown-of-Thorns Starfish extraction activities within the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape.
