In celebration of this year’s Silway River Week, a River Clean-Up activity was conducted on April 19 at Water Water Quality Monitoring Stations (WQMS) 1 and 2 in Purok Fatima, Brgy. Dadiangas West, General Santos City.
Said initiative was participated by the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) General Santos City, which was spearheaded by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) XII, with the participation of the City ENRO, and the Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges as part of the Silway River rehabilitation efforts.
This was followed by a tree growing activity at WQMS from 6 to 9, at Brgy. San Isidro, wherein over 150 seedlings of Narra and Bamboo were planted.
Silway River is the official entry of Region XII for this year’s DENR Rivers for Life Award, a program that started in 2018 under former DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu.
One of its objectives is to raise environmental awareness of the importance of our rivers, being the “lifeblood of the earth”.
Through the said program, various sectors have initiated actions to protect and conserve our rivers.
Meanwhile, though grateful for the said river’s recognition, agencies and organizations of South Cotabato opted that they will continue with their efforts to rehabilitate and protect Silway River, regardless of the result of what rank the river shall get from the nomination.
The Silway River is among the Top 5 nominees for the DENR Rivers for Life Award 2022. (MJAZULITA-UGARTE -CENROGSC)
