A juvenile Serpent Eagle (Spilornis holospilus) was found at Purok Mahogany, Brgy. Kinarum, Magpet, Cotabato last May 14, 2021 by a concerned citizen named ; Crisanto Rebuta.
Rebuta said, he found the raptor in his farm and is unable to fly, it was just sitting on the ground despite his efforts to drive it away. Sensing that something is wrong, Rebuta grabbed and wrapped it in a cloth, then took it home for a temporary shelter before he turns it over to Community Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO) Matalam of North Cotabato.
In a health certificate issued by the Office of the City Veterinarian of Kidapawan, the bird is said to be alert and responsive. There were also no bruises, pains, broken bones, and damaged wings as inspected. They recommended blood examinations to determine a definitive diagnosis.
On May 24, 2021, the eagle was turned over in DENR Regional Office XII and is now under the protection of the Conservation and Development Division and was brought to the Regional Wildlife and Rescue Center at Purok Masagana, Brgy. Blingkong, Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat for further diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.
The department is reminding the public to not violate the Republic Act 9147 or the “Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act” that aims to conserve the country’s wildlife resources and their habitats for sustainability.
