KORONADAL CITY - Hundreds of marine mammals were spotted in Sarangani Bay by the monitoring team from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 12 and partners during their 3rd Quarter Monitoring last August 13-16. Based on the data from the Office of the Protected Area Superintendent (PASu) of Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS), the monitoring team composed of personnel from PASu-SBPS, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Sarangani Province Environmental Conservation and Protection Center and the General Santos City Environment and Natural Resources Office spotted two (2) Dwarf/Pygmy Sperm Whales in Malapatan, 40-60 Spinner Dolphins in Glan and Malapatan, 150-200 Fraser’s Dolphins in General Santos City and Glan, four (4) Pygmy Killer Whales in Malapatan and six (6) Risso’s Dolphins in Glan. According to the Office of the PASu-SBPS, the monitoring team also observed patches of garbage floating within the bay ranging from PET bottles, cellophanes, plastic wrappers and other non-biodegradable materials that may harm the cetaceans and other marine organisms. They have also observed several fishing vessels conducting activities within the bay. Dr. Sabdullah C. Abubacar, CESO IV, Regional Executive Director of DENR 12 at the same time the chairperson of Protected Area Management Board (PAMB)-SBPS said that the DENR and Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) have intensified the monitoring of the all developments and day-to-day undertakings of all establishments in the bay to in order protect and preserve its natural resources. "All stakeholders must work together to conserve and protect the Sarangani Bay. DENR alone cannot protect the water body. We have to synergize our work and activities to help and preserve the bay," Dr. Abubacar’s statement during the PAMB-SBPS meeting on Thursday, August 22. As the board’s chairperson, Dr. Abubacar also mandated the EMB 12 to give updates in the succeeding PAMB meetings regarding issuances, violations and actions taken on establishments which will serve as bases on how far the board have gone in terms of enforcement. Sarangani Province Governor and PAMB-SBPS Vice-chairperson Steve C. Solon said that the sighted species will vanish if the in and out movements in bay will not be fixed and monitored. “The implementation of the rules should be strict so that everyone will follow. We can have the economic development and preservation of the protected seascape at the same time,” Gov. Solon said. The office of the PASu-SBPS headed by PASu Joy C. Ologuin recommended that local government units in the coastal areas of SBPS must strengthen their functions in the implementation of proper waste disposal in order to halt trash from entering into the bay. Regular patrolling is also necessary to regulate the activities within the SBPS. Governor Solon pledged to support the DENR and EMB in enforcing environmental laws to save and protect the water body. His office will also provide financial assistance to the DENR to conduct a monthly monitoring of marine mammals in the SBPS. The Sarangani Bay was declared as Protected Area in the Republic Act 11038 or the Expanded National Integrated Protected Area System Act of 2018 wherein the State will ensure its protection and maintenance of natural, biological and physical diversities for the present and future generations.
