The DENR Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Glan has discussed with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Eastern Sarangani the departmentโ€™s mandate, programs, watershed areas, and other environmental matters after the new PCG station commander paid a courtesy visit to the field office on Tuesday (April 4).
CENR Officer Dr. Rosalinda B. Cortez also requested PCG ENS Genesis Val C. Sarmiento and his team to join the upcoming Integrated Coastal Management Planning via ridge-to-reef approach which would heighten the protection of the watersheds and coastal and marine ecosystems especially that the Sarangani Bay is a protected seascape.
Dr. Cortez also hoped that the PCG would continue to heighten their partnership with the DENR in implementing the environmental laws in area. โ€œWe have a binding agreement in the SOCCSKSARGEN Environmental Protection Task Force wherein different agencies converged against environmental crimes,โ€ she added.
PCG ENS Sarmiento extended his overwhelming gratitude for the pleasant welcome of the CENRO Glan and guaranteed his support in helping curb environmental crimes in Eastern Sarangani. (With report and photos from JCDumanon, IO Designate, CENRO Glan) | RSCIGM

The team composed of Conservation and Development Division, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources (PENRO) of Sarangani, and Protected Area Management Office of SBPS sighted the sea cow on February 8 floating on the water surface at a safe distance from the shore of Kawas, Alabel town.
ย
DENR Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO) of Sarangani Maria Elvira V. Lumayag said the SBPS has been the home to a lot of dugongs which indicates the good health and condition of the bayโ€™s coastal and marine ecosystems. โ€œThe presence of sea cows in the SBPS is a valuable indicator of the success of DENRโ€™s conservation efforts in the region,โ€ she said.
ย
Joy C. Ologuin, protected area superintendent of the SBPS, said โ€œThe sighting is an opening salvo of the upcoming 27th anniversary of the protected seascape. The SBPS week provides an opportunity to celebrate the success of conservation efforts in the region and to continue to raise awareness on the importance of environmental protection and conservation.โ€

The DENR-12 through the PENRO Sarangani continues to monitor and protect the marine and coastal habitats in the area to ensure the long-term survival of the dugongs (listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature) and other species in SBPS. The DENR Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Sarangani and Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS) Protected Area Management Office concluded a series of public consultations on May 16-17 in the coastal municipalities of Maitum and Kiamba to orient the public of their schedule and procedure of demarcation activities in the western portion of SBPS.
ย
"Sarangani Bay became a protected seascape by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 756, Series of 1996, and was legislated through Republic Act No. 11038 or the ENIPAS Act of 2018," SBPS Protected Area Superintendent (PASU) Joy C. Ologuin explained to the participants.
ย
The DENR shall conduct demarcation activities to officially mark the seascape's boundaries through the use of concrete posts and witness monuments pursuant to BMB Technical Bulletin 2019-01.
ย
"Before we can install these boundary markers, we must first consult with the local community and affected stakeholders," affirmed PENRO Sarangani Maria Elvira Lumayag.
ย
The participants were assured that no markers shall be installed within houses or private property without the landowners' consent. The markers are placed not to lay claim on private land, but only to mark the boundaries of the protected area.
ย
"We believe that demarcation is one way to remind the public to treat Sarangani Bay with greater care and appreciation," PENRO Sarangani TSD chief Jesus Boja stated.
ย
"SBPS is our very own national heritage. It is our joint responsibility to conserve and protect it for present and future generations," he added. | With report and photos from SRCabildo, PENRO Sarangani IO Designate
