RDC’s Committee on Environment members convene



CITY OF KORONADAL, August 31, 2017 (DENR) – Newly created Committee on Environment (CE) under the Regional Development Council XII convened its members on August 30, 2017 at the Department of Agriculture XII Conference Room, Regional Center. The purpose of which was to adopt operational and present technical concerns.

In his message during the committee’s 3rd Quarter Regular Meeting, Chairperson Col. Celestino F. Desamito (Ret.) underscored that the committee is a recommendatory body that will operationalize all the discussions and plans through convergence programs.

As approved by the body, the CE will provide guidance to appropriate agencies on sustainable development issues. It will ensure the implementation of environment-related sustainable development goals (UNCED) and other related international commitments. The committee will also serve as coordinating mechanism for all environment-related structures and bodies.

Moreover, CE will ensure the integration of Disaster Risk-Reduction-Climate Change Adaptation (DRR-CCA) concerns and monitor the implementation of plans, policies and programs on sustainable development. It is composed by representatives of regional line agencies, academe, local government units and private sectors in the region.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region XII will act as the Vice-Chair of the committee headed by the Regional Director Reynulfo A. Juan while the agency’s Planning and Management Division headed by its Chief Vicente Y. Curtiz will serve as the committee’s secretariat.

DENR XII Conservation and Development Division Chief Dr. Ali M. Hadjinasser, together with Foresters Derie Macabaning, Benjamin D. Alangca and Enforcement Division Assistant Chief Soraya L. Meditar presented the updates on Protected Areas, Expanded National Greening Program, Buayan-Malungon River Basin and Multi-sector Forest Protection Task Force respectively.

Dr. Hadjinasser stressed that through the Committee on Environment, the facilities and preservation of protected areas and all concerns related to environment in the region will improve.

RDC XII Resolution No. 29, Series of 2017 during its 57th Regular Meeting on March 15, 2017 approved the creation of the CE as its affiliate committee. It alsoserves as a venue for the deliberation and resolution of issues and concerns related to the environment.

The theme of the recently concluded meeting revolved on “Forest Protection and Watershed Management.”





October 24, 2017 - The recently conducted Training Workshop on Flagship Campaign Development for the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape was attended by Information Officers, representatives of the MENRO covered by the SBPS, staff from BFAR and staff from the PENRO.

Among the highlights of the activity were the identification of behavioural change that needs campaign for the conservation and protection of the Sarangani Bay. Also, the participants were able to choose three vulnerable flagship species found within the protected seascape. These are the green sea turtle, Thalassodendrom ciliatum (seagrass) and priority is the dugong, listed as one of the endangered species. Just this October, 3 dugongs were found dead along the shore of the SBPS. Activities for the 22nd Anniversary of the SBPS since it was declared in 1996 as a protected area were also planned out.
